Tk 5 Lakh Compensation for Each Martyr’s Family

The inaugural meeting of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation’s executive committee took place yesterday at the State Guest House Jamuna, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. During this meeting, the committee announced that each family of the martyrs from the student-led mass uprising will receive an initial compensation of Tk 500,000, while the injured will receive up to Tk 100,000 each. The distribution of compensation for the injured will be expedited, and cheques for the martyr families will be presented at a commemorative event in the capital. The committee has urged contributions from all sectors of society, including the Bangladeshi diaspora, organizations, and businesses, to bolster the foundation’s efforts. Additionally, plans are in place to secure office space and recruit volunteers to manage operations, as well as to preserve and archive videos, images, oral histories, and memorabilia related to the July-August mass uprising. Professor Yunus stressed the need for transparency in donations, stating, “Every donation, no matter how small, should be documented, and the names of donors should be preserved, ideally published on the foundation’s website.” He also highlighted that the health ministry would cover treatment costs for the injured, with the foundation’s compensation providing additional support. Key attendees at the meeting included advisers to the interim government Sharmeen Murshid, Nahid Islam, and Asif Mahmud, along with the foundation’s General Secretary Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho and Treasurer Kazi Waqar Ahmad.
